20 Aug 2011. Lieutenant Navdeep Singh was the Ghatak Platoon Commander deployed in High Altitude Area on the Line Of Control in Gurez Sector (J&K). On receiving information about the terrorists, Lieutenant Navdeep laid an ambush on well appreciated and likely routes of the terrorists and accordingly readjusted the ambush party to a suitable killing ground. On spotting the terrorists approaching the area, the ambush party opened up with the accurate fire. Leading from the front and displaying exemplary courage and conspicuous bravery, Lieutenant Navdeep eliminated three terrorists at close range. Realising the danger to his comrades, he swiftly changed his firing position. While doing so, he was hit by a bullet, however before falling unconscious he eliminated the fourth terrorist. Lieutenant Navdeep Singh displayed outstanding leadership and courage in the action and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army and was posthumously awarded Ashoka Chakra.
His gallant action resulted in his team eliminating twelve hardcore terrorists in one of the fiercest encounters on the Line of Control, dealing a crippling body blow to the terrorist groups.
