Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the proposal for admission of Girls in Sainik School with effect from academic session 2021-22. This decision has been taken after a successful pilot project which was started by Ministry of Defence in Sainik School of Mizoram 2 years ago.

In November 2018, Central government had decided to induct Girls in all Sainik School across the country to provide quality training. That decision of Central government has been finally approved by Defence minister Rajnath Singh.
This decision is being also seen as the first step towards the entry of girls in National Defence Academy(NDA).
In a pilot project of Ministry of Defence, Sainik School of Mizoram gave admission to 6 girl students in class VI and Sainik School of Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) gave admission to 15 girls in class IX in April last year.
