Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will make combat helicopters for the Indian Armed Forces. HAL has already started working on this mega project. These 10 to 12 tonnes helicopters will be as modern and powerful as the Apache Helicopter.
HAL managing director R Madhavan said that the objective of this mega plan is to stop the import of choppers to three armies in the coming years. Madhavan said that HAL has prepared the initial design of the helicopter and under the initial plan, it is targeted to build at least 500 helicopters and if the government approves this year, the first prototype of the helicopter will be ready in 2023.
HAL managing director R Madhavan said, “One of the important plans that we are focusing to build 10 to 12 ton class helicopters to replace the Mi-17 fleet. It will be an indigenous platform and will have a capacity to build around 500 helicopters. There will be no need to import four lakh crore rupees choppers from other countries. Rs 9,600 crore will be required to design the helicopter.”
He further said, “If we get its approval in 2020, we will build the first helicopter by 2027. We plan to build 500 helicopters of this category. This is an important plan that we are working on.”
