The Indian Army has received 10,000 new SiG 716 assault rifle for operation in Jammu and Kashmir. These rifles are made of United States America. With the addition of this rifle, The strength of Indian Army has increased in Jammu and Kashmir. it will be able to respond effectively to the nefarious activities of the Pakistani Army from across the Line of Control (LoC).
Sources said that the first batch of 10,000 SiG Rifles has arrived in India from America. Another consignment of ten thousand will come to India soon. In February this year, India signed an agreement with the US to purchase around 72,000 assault rifles as part of fast track procurement and to be delivered within a year since the sign of contract. The total cost of this deal is Rs 700 crores.
The Indian Army needed a rifle that could fire more large and lethal cartridges. At present only medium 5.56×45 mm cartridges can be fired from INSAS rifles. There is a big difference between these two assault rifles. The Sig 716 rifle uses a more powerful 7.62x51mm cartridge.
Supply of ammunition for sniper rifles of the Indian Army has also started . 21 lakh rounds ammunition have been already ordered. According to sources, a consignment of 10,000 SiG 716 rifles has been sent to the Northern Command. The Northern Command itself has the responsibility to stop the infiltration from across the border with operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
66,000 of the SiG rifles to be received under the agreement will be given to the Indian Army. The Navy will be given 2,000 and the Indian Air Force will be given 4,000 rifles. According to sources, the strength of the Indian Army will increase further when it gets 7 lakh AK-203 assault rifles. They are to be produced in a joint venture between India and Russia.
