India says “deeply concerned” by Turkey’s “unilateral military offensive”

India has reacted strongly on Turkey’s recent activity in Syria. With the withdrawal of US forces from Syria, Turkey is continuously attacking Syria and targeting Kurdish fighters. On this, a strong response has been given from India on Thursday. The Foreign Ministry said that India is concerned about Turkey’s action and appeals to talk peacefully with Syria.

MEA said, “We are deeply concerned at the unilateral military offensive by Turkey in north-east Syria. Turkey’s actions can undermine stability in the region and the fight against terrorism. Its action also has the potential for causing humanitarian and civilian distress.”

MEA further stated, “We call upon Turkey to exercise restraint and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We urge the peaceful settlement of all issues through dialogue and discussion.”

MEA statement on Turkey

Few days ago, US President Donald Trump had announced the withdrawal of the US Army from Syria. From Tuesday-Wednesday, US started withdrawing its forces from some areas of Syria and immediately the Turkish and Syrian army started attacking the Kurdish fighters present there. These attacks were announced on Twitter by Turkish President Tayyip Androgan himself.

The Kurdish fighters who are being attacked by Turkey, had supported the US military in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria but now US has withdrawn it’s force from Syria.

Iran has also called for an ‘immediate halt’ to Turkey’s military campaign in Syria.

Turkey President Erdogan also threatened European countries that he would send 3.6 million Syrian refugees to Europe if the EU describes Turkish military attack in Syria as an ‘invasion’.
