Recently Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington DC and Both were talked about relation between Indian and US.
At the same Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar defended India’s right to buy defence equipments. This statement of S Jaishankar came regarding the buying S-400 missile defense system from Russia despite the threat of sanctions from the United States.
On meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, S jaishankar said that India was discussing the US sanction but India has right to buy defence equipment from any country.
“We have always maintained that what we buy — the sourcing of military equipment — is very much a sovereign right,” S Jaishankar said to media after meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
S Jaishankar further said, “We would not like any state to tell us what to buy or not to buy from Russia any more than we would like any state to tell us to buy or not buy from America. The freedom of choice is ours and we think it’s in everybody’s interest to recognize that”.
Actually India is going to buy five S-400 Russian missile systems for $5.2 billion but under the 2017 law, USA has imposed sanctions against Russia due to its involvement in Ukraine and Syria.
In June 2019, US ended the Turkey’s involvement in the F-35 fighter jet program because Turkey is also buying Russian S-400 missile system.
