Indian Army To Order 72,000 Sig 716 Assault Rifles

The Indian Army is going to place another order of 72,000 Sig 716 assault rifles from the United States. Earlier, Indian Army had also ordered the 72,400 Sig 716 assault rifles.

Indian Army has already received the first lot of 72,400 Sig 716 assault rifles from the United States which are used by troops in Northern Command and other operational areas of Indian Army.

India had acquired the rifles under the fast-track procurement (FTP) programme.

These new rifles will replace the existing Indian Insas rifles. The Indian Army needed a rifle that could fire more large and lethal cartridges. At present only medium 5.56×45 mm cartridges can be fired from INSAS rifles. There is a big difference between these two assault rifles. The Sig 716 rifle uses a more powerful 7.62x51mm cartridge.
