After the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, the government has now started to hunt down the network of terror in the valley. According to information received from sources in the Ministry of Defense, it has been decided to deploy Special Forces of Indian Army, Air Force and Navy in Kashmir jointly. Under the recently formed Armed Forces Special Operations Division, AFSOD, it has been decided to deploy the special forces of the three forces together.
According to an officer posted in the Ministry of Defense, “It is not the first time that Special Forces of Navy and Air Force have been deployed for operation in Kashmir valley But this will be the first time that all Special Forces under AFSOD will work together.”
The Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD) includes the Indian Army’s para commandos, the Navy’s Marcos and the Air Force’s Garuda commandos. These AFSOD will have the responsibility of operations in Kashmir Valley.
The first Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD) is being headed by Major General Ashok Dhingra.
Although Garuda commandos of the Air Force are already stationed in Hajin and Lolab area of Kashmir While MARCOS has already deployed in many areas including in Kashmir including Wular lake.
The main of deployment of Joint Special forces in Kashmir to give the troops about the experience of operating jointly in real operations.
The Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD) has also carried out two different exercise at two different locations practicing assaults on strategic enemy positions and taking back the captured areas.
Exercises of The Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD) :
- Ex Smelling Field : First Exercise was conducted in Kutch region with code name Ex Smelling Field.
- DANX-2019 : Second Exercise was conducted in Andman and Nicobar Islands with Code Name DANX-2019.
