On February 29, Major General Madhuri Kanitkar has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. She took charge as Deputy Chief, Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS), Medical (under the Chief of Defence Staff) in New Delhi.
Madhuri Kanitkar is the third woman officer of the Indian Armed Force to become Lieutenant General. Madhuri Kanitkar has been the former dean of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.
Major General Madhuri Kanitkar and her husband Lieutenant General Rajiv, are the first couple to achieve this rank in the Indian armed Forces.

Dr. Punita Arora, Surgeon and Vice Admiral and former Three Star Flag Officer of the Indian Navy was the first woman officer who was promoted as the Lieutenant General. Air Marshal Padmavati Bandopadhyay, an Air Force woman officer, was the second woman to be promoted to the Lieutenant General post.
