No records of any previous “surgical strike” before 2016: DGMO of Indian Army

In an RTI reply, The Directorate General of Military Operations of the Army accepted that he does not have records of any “surgical strike” conducted before September 29, 2016.

Rohit Choudhary had filed an RTI petition previous year regarding the Surgical Strike. Rohit asked the some question in his RTI query:

a) How many Surgical strikes on where carried out from 2004 to 2014 (Provide me year wise list with country name)?

b) How many Surgical strikes on Pakistan did by Indian Army before September 2014& How many of them were successful?

c) How many Surgical strikes on Pakistan did by Indian Army after September 2014 & How many of them were successful?

d)How many of our brave soldiers have lost their life in surgical Strikes?

The Directorate General of Military Operations of the Army replied:

a)Indian Army conducted Surgical Strikes along the LC on 29 Sep 2016.

b) No Indian soldiers lost his life during Surgical Strikes.

c) This section does not hold any data pertaining to surgical strikes if carried out before 29 sept 2016.

Congress is claiming that ‘6 surgical strikes’ in UPA tenure. According to Rajeev Shukla of congress, “6 surgical strikes were conducted during Manmohan Singh govt. One was conducted on June 19, 2008 in Bhattal Sector in J&K’s Poonch, one from Aug 30-September 1, 2011 in Sharda Sector across Neelam River Valley in Kel”

He further said that a third surgical strike took place on January 6, 2013, at Sawan Patra Checkpost; another on July 27 and July 28, 2013, at Nazapir Sector; a fifth one on August 6, 2013 at Neelam Valley; and the sixth one on January 14, 2014.

But Former DGMO of Indian Army from 2012 to 2014, Lt Gen Vinod Bhatia had denied Congress claims of ‘surgical strikes’ during UPA tenure. he also tweeted that Surgical Strike of 2016 was first of its kind.

“The earlier strikes were not even strikes, they were cross-border operations done at the local level without much planning, without much thought,” he said when asked about Congress’s claims of two surgical strikes conducted at a time when he was DGMO.
