Five years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) to involve young scientists in Defence related research in a big way. As a part of this ongoing efforts, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will dedicate Five DRDO Young Scientists Laboratories to the nation on Thursday January 2, 2020.
This DRDO Young Scientists Laboratories (DYSLs) will boost the indigenous research capabilities in the defence sector of India. All five labs will have young scientists and directors whose ages below 35 years.

The new five DRDO Young Scientists Laboratories (DYSLs) are:
- Artificial Intelligence (Bengaluru)
- Quantum Technologies (IIT Mumbai)
- Cognitive Technologies (IIT Chennai)
- Asymmetric Technologies (Kolkata)
- Smart Materials (Hyderabad)
The event shall be organised at the Aeronautical Development Establishment, DRDO at Bengaluru. Prime Minister shall unveil a plaque to mark the dedication, and address the Scientists.
DRDO will also showcase some of its innovative products to the Prime Minister at an Exhibition on the occasion. Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa and DRDO Chairman Dr. G Satheesh Reddy will be present on the occasion.
It was on August 20, 2014, while distributing the DRDO awards and addressing a distinguished gathering of senior and eminent defence scientists, and senior officers of the armed forces in New Delhi, the Prime Minister Modi had suggested that at least five DRDO labs should be identified exclusively for innovation from young scientists upto the age of 35 years.
On that occasion, the Prime Minister had also called for involving youth in defence research related activities in a big way, to ensure that India remained abreast of global technological advancements in the field.
Due to delays and failure in many Defence projects, Prime Minister Modi wanted to speed up the Defence production in 2014. Pm also wanted DRDO to make world class Defence Production company.
Pm Modi had asked DRDO to set the agenda to keep pace with global defence community and make technology as the key driver of defence productions.
