The Shaurya Chakra is awarded for gallantry and every year it is awarded on Republic Day by Honorable President of India. This year Shaurya Chakra for Garud Commando Milind Kishor Who Killed Militant In Close Quarter Battle in J&K.
The terror attacks on Pathankot Air Base brought the Indian Air Force’s elite Garud Commandos into focus. A team of highly skilled commando operatives, they have been quietly fighting in the counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir valley.
This year, two martyrs of the elite fighting unit were awarded gallantry awards on Republic Day. Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was awarded the Ashok Chakra, his colleague Sergeant Khairnar Milind Kishor was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
Sergeant Kishor was serving with the Rashtriya Rifles in Bandiporain J&K. On October 10, 2017, he was part of an operation on the outskirts of Hajin village where six armed terrorists were hiding. Sergeant Kishor was a part of the stop party that was tasked with blocking the escape route from the terrorists’ hiding place and had them pinned. At 04:40 hrs on 11 Oct, the terrorists decided to make a run for it but ended up running into the fearless commando.
The terrorists fired indiscriminately and lobbed grenades in the Sergeant Kishor’s direction, injuring him. But the task at hand was more important and without a care for his own personal safety, the Commando continued to fire at the targets and held his position. In the resulting close quarter battle, Sergeant Kishor killed one and injured another terrorist. He was hit by more bullets that critically injured him.
Although he was evacuated to the Base Hospital, the Indian Air Force commando succumbed to the injuries. For showing exceptional courage in the face of death and leading the fight against the terrorists, Sergeant Khairnar Milind Kishor was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
