The balance of power changes when Iran buys Russian fighter jets

According to Military Watch, Iran’s purchase of fighter jets and some other weapons from Russia will have a great impact on the balance of power in the Middle East.

The US newspaper’s comments were made after the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, General Mohammad Bagheri, revealed a plan to buy Russian fighters and helicopters to enhance combat capabilities for the Air Force.

General Bagheri said that Iran needs a comprehensive roadmap to have strong relations with other countries, especially Russia and other neighboring countries: “Given its diverse cooperation capacity with Russia in military-defence, The problem now is to increase bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.”

Talking about the contracts signed, Mr. Bagheri noted that the contracts were signed shortly after the Iran arms embargo was lifted and “we will discuss the implementation of the contracts shortly.” on this visit”.

It is known that the United Nations arms embargo against Iran has been lifted since October 18, 2020.

Evaluation of the Iranian procurement package, Military Watch said that, for helicopters, it will most likely be Mi-171Sh, Mi-171Sh2 or even Mi-171Sh-VN – attack variants of the helicopter line. multi-function Mi-8/Mi-17.

Explaining this statement, the US newspaper said that Tehran needs a line of multi-purpose helicopters that can still ensure the ability to transport troops but still have a very strong attack ability.

Meanwhile, with fighters, Iran is very interested in buying Su-30 fighters, which is an improved version of the Su-27. In terms of their capabilities, the Su-30 is completely superior to the Israeli and Saudi F-15Cs.

The Su-30 heavy fighter will be a necessary addition to the light fighters already in the Iranian Air Force. Just equipped with a sufficient number, Su-30 will help Iran maintain its influence in the region.

In addition, if the defense budget allows Iran, it can completely buy modern Russian fighters such as Su-35, Su-57. It is currently unclear which version of the Su-30 Iran will buy.
The most modern versions like the MKI, MKV and MKK, but they are also more expensive than the base version Su-30K. Buying the Su-30K version could be an option that fits Iran’s defense budget.

However, the lack of a thrust vector control system would put it at risk when confronting experienced Israeli pilots. Therefore, Iran may also consider more modern versions of the Su-30SM.

According to Military Watch, no matter which version Iran chooses in the Su-30 series, this procurement package will change the balance of power at least in terms of the Air Force in the Middle East region.
