Kargil war hero Lt Gen YK Joshi has been appointed as the Northern Army Commander on Thursday. He will have the responsibility of protecting the borders of Ladakh with China and Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan. Northern Command is considered strategically important. Veteran of counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir Valley, Lt Gen Joshi will replace Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, who is retiring on 31 January.

Yogesh Kumar Joshi was Lieutenant Colonel during Operation Vijay in 1999. He was given the responsibility to capture point 5140 in Dras sector. Lieutenant Colonel Joshi astounded the enemy with his cleverness and bravery and successfully achieved this goal. That victory ensured India’s success in Kargil War.
During the Kargil war, YK Joshi went ahead and led his soldiers. Lieutenant General Joshi played the role of commanding officer of the team that captured Tiger Hill during the Kargil war. During that time he was part of the 13th Jammu and Kashmir Rifle.
Lieutenant General C P Mohanty has been appointed as the commander of the Southern Command. He will replace Lt Gen SK Saini who will take charge as new Vice Chief of the Indian Army on 25 January.
